Each year, Hollywood produces countless watered down LGBTQ+ themed attempts. Money grabs (I'm looking at you, Ammonite) that overshadow international films like And Then We Danced.
And Then We Danced is a touching, hypnotizing coming of age film, located in ultraconservative Georgia, where the main actor, Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) portrays a dancer training to get a spot in the National Georgian Ensemble. During the intense preparation prior to tryouts, Merab falls in love - throwing him off balance and, ultimately forces him to explore his true self.
This film "incited" national protests; as Georgia is historically homophobic. Not only are the performances brave, the entire conception of this movie in such a conservative country is a far right f*ck you. Love’s lovely, borderless, and universally yours.
