The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão is the best film of 2020. A lush tropical drama set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the 1950s. A mesmerizing, decade spanning film, depicting the trajectory of two sisters who are separated by a terrible lie.
At immediate glance, first sister, Eurídice (Carol Duarte), plays a classical piano prodigy, destined for greatness, while sister number two, Guida (Julia Stockler), lives more in the moment; seeking a good time. As time passes by, the audience see's each sister grow older and inevitably stare their very own aspirations in the eye.
Director Karim Aïnouz also touches on the social constructs of 1950s Brazil - the "role" of a woman and class division are both intertwined into the storyline. After seeing this film, it is easy to see why The Invisible Life won Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival.
