The Skin I Live In
Pedro Almodovar

“I breathe. I breathe. I breathe. I know I breathe.”
Upon losing his wife in a tragic car accident: renowned plastic surgeon: Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) develops a synthetic, burn-resistant skin from his home laboratory. The subject of his experiments is a lone woman named Vera (Elena Anaya), whom he holds captive within his estate. As Vera grapples with herself, the terrible nature of Legard’s work is revealed.
The Skin I live In is a gorgeous movie. Spanish director, Pedro Almodóvar, is an outspoken advocate of traditional film, and for a story that dwells deeply into the sensation of touch, the decision to shoot in 35mm feels necessary to what he’s creating.
While exploring subjects still considered taboo for American audiences (sexuality, rape, and gender dysphoria) The Skin I Live In still captures the feel of a classic Hollywood movie--reminiscent of Frankenstein.
