Birds of Passage
Ciro Guera
Not Rated | 2h 5min | Crime, Drama | 2018
Colombia’s submission to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film 2018, Birds Of Passage is a sprawling movie about the origins of the Colombian drug trade; a 20 year reimagined history of violence.
Director Ciro Guerra is a master of cultural immersion. Similar to his freshman film, Embrace the Serpent, Birds Of Passage shines a light on the importance of indigenous culture; portraying the marginalized perspective. The director's ability to balance weighted topics like the importance of small community, the brutal reality of drug trade and the never-ending detriments of colonialism is truly genius.
A modern day Godfather with calculated cinematography with a focus on natural light, cultural color and the beauty of the Colombian landscape. The voice of overlooked cultures should be heard and unapologetic in all mediums; we need to pay attention to more films like this - take this epic journey.
