Connaissais de Face
Khruangbin makes globally inspired music that distinctly feels like another place and time. Specifically, better times. With track #3, Connaissais de Face, off their latest album, Mordechai, the band lulls you into remembrance of simpler times, with hazy, reverb-laden chanting, melodic guitar licks and a groovy baseline.
The song chronicles a local Houston pub the band would frequent weekly. Each visit, they were met by the same smiling bartender named Stacy, who’d remember the specifics of drink and burger orders, and had the best iPod playlists. When Khruangbin heard that Stacy passed away, they decided to make Connaissais in her honor.
The hook echoes ‘You know us by our faces, but not by our names’ in French. There’s a kind of intimacy between the bartender, waitress, barista and the patron we’re all missing out on at the moment. Though we happen to be stripped from that intimacy, Connaissais de Face beckons us to reflect on precious memories of places past.
