In late 2019, John Prine joined Kurt Vile in studio to record his song “How Lucky.”  Known as one of his generation’s greatest songwriters, Prine passes the torch to Kurt in this single.  The two trade verses that describe being in a familiar place, but forgetting events that occurred there.  They’re grateful though for the passage of time and the chance to create new memories.  

 It’s a simple song embellished with the pair’s unparalleled finger-plucked guitar technique. “Lucky” indeed was Kurt for recording with Prine while he was still able--the legendary Chicago songwriter sadly passed from COVID-19 related complications in April. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Kurt refers to performing with Prine as “the single most special musical moment in my life.” 

In that way, “How Lucky” is a time capsule of a beloved Philadelphia musician’s brush with greatness and the succession of folk music from past to present.  It’s a match made in nostalgic, Fishtown heaven.
