Summer Teeth
Often overlooked in Wilco’s vast discography, Summerteeth makes a triumphant comeback for its drinking-age-anniversary. The original sixteen tunes, including standouts “A Shot in the Arm” and “Via Chicago,” are all remastered and accompanied by over three hours of demos, live and alternate recordings.
“Summer Teeth - Slow Rhodes Version” was the quintessential leading single for the re-release, showcasing the vintage keyboard and synth sounds that define Wilco’s emerging post-modern sound and marked dissension from alt-country. Don’t be fooled by the title track’s laid-back, bright sound--it’s a song about perhaps the darkest period in Tweedy’s life.
A time before he regained control of his health and prioritized time with his family. “Summer Teeth” is a morbid glimpse into Christmases Future. What’s comforting is having twenty years of Wilco records that prove Tweedy was able to right his path.
Summerteeth’s re-release is a beautiful reminder to keep our loved ones close (metaphorically, of course) and make the positive changes we want to see in the world.
