Eyes Wide Shut
Stanley Kubrick
R | 2h 39min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller | 1999
Sex cults of the elite had something of a cultural moment last year. I’m certain I can spare the details on that, but it’s interesting nonetheless that coincided with the 20th anniversary of Kubrick’s final film.
Eyes Wide Shut isn’t strictly about sex-cults. It’s about FOMO and jealousy in relationships. It’s about class and privilege. Like all of Kubrick’s major works, this film is about a lot of things, and cannot be succinctly summed up in a few sentences.
What I can say is: Eyes Wide Shut layers these themes perfectly. Kubrick is the greatest master in the entire art of cinema and that skill is on full display here. Its cinematography is superb, its dialogue flows naturally, and every detail holds significance. If you haven’t already, please watch this movie.
