Heaven Knows What
Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie
R | 1h 37min | Crime, Drama | 2014
There are plenty of movies about opioid addiction, but never has it been shown so objectively in a work of fiction. This is a movie about romance and heroin, but there is nothing romantic in its depiction.
The Safdies explore a sort of visceral realism with each project they take on. Something that goes beyond a documentary approach. Starring Arielle Holmes as a lightly fictionalized version of herself, Heaven Knows What is derived straight from her memoirs to the screen.
To anybody who’s experienced Kensington firsthand there’s something eerily familiar about seeing these characters.
It’s as if instead of passing them on the sidewalk, one were to quietly follow them along the subway place to place. They’re not likable people. They don’t need to be for us to understand them, and that’s what this film achieves…and it has a killer soundtrack.
