WHOO

WHOO
Nick Hakim is a New-York based psychedelic-soul crooner whose music is as hypnotic as it is poetic. The song in the spotlight is WHOO, the album closer on his latest effort WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD.
The album is a mash of the soulful sounds we’ve come to expect from Hakim. It’s easy listening, with each song effortlessly melting into the next. WHOO has a melancholic magnetism to it that wakes you up, and draws you in. It teems with a very familiar sense of reflective longing, and hope, yet it feels triumphant.
And it feels like a culmination of sorts, which makes sense given some context; in an interview earlier this year, Hakim mentions he started WHOO when he was working on his debut album, Green Twins, and didn’t finish it until the end of WTMG. WHOO’s steadily rolling muted drums, warm flute, and Hakim’s timeless crooning feel just like the giant exhale we’ve been waiting all spring for.
