Village Bagels

Mullica Hill, NJ

Tucked away in the small, tight-knit town of Mullica Hill, NJ sits a family owned and operated since 1995 bagel shop that has seen the evolution of time.

First and foremost, let’s meet Curt Atkins, Phil’s father who started the business. Curt fell into the bagel biz when a shopping center opened in their hometown. He quickly moved into the space, started rolling dough and quickly became the local spot for fresh bagels every day.

For 22 years, the company ran as a cash-only establishment — Dad didn’t believe in paying credit card companies for their service. But that didn’t stop anyone from mustering up cash for their favorite family business.

Local visitors and commuters near and far continue to stop at the quaint bagel shop for their favorite breakfast sandwiches and coffee.

For the past year, people were still craving bagels but were regulated to their homes. In an effort to continue to provide the best quality food to the people who have always supported them, Phil finally decided to offer Village Bagels on DoorDash which opened up a world of online delivery apps, even in rural New Jersey.

Today, Curt is still the main baker. Phil runs the day-to-day operations but he didn’t always see himself there.

In high school, Phil was an avid golfer and if not for a shoulder injury which sidelined him, he says he could see himself in the Pro-golf realm.

After a year in college, he learned his interests lied more in hospitality and working hands-on in the family business.

He learned the details of running a business every step of the way and has helped turn his parent’s small shop into one of the most coveted bagel joints in South Jersey.

If not for Village Bagels, Phil says he could see himself in Hotel Management. Applying the personality and customer service skills that have been ingrained in him to larger scale organizations.

For now, Mullica Hill and Village Bagels is where Phil’s heart is. This summer, on your way to your favorite Jersey beaches, be SHORE to stop by Village Bagels.
